What is A Microdermabrasion Treatment?

Microdermabrasion is a minimally invasive skin resurfacing procedure carried out to smooth out skin texture. The process involves the gentle removal of the skin’s blemished top layer to bring to the surface the smoother, less scarred skin underneath.

It is preferred over surgical scar treatments for its lower price tag, shorter recovery period, and milder side effects.

Microdermabrasion for Acne Scars

Our skin develops acne scars when the spots left behind by our acne don’t heal properly. This may lead to depressed or raised scars depending on whether collagen production is disrupted or accelerated to abnormal degrees, respectively.

Collagen is a protein that is dispatched to heal our skin when it most needs it, such as during breakouts and split skin. Microdermabrasion resumes or speeds up this natural response by scrubbing off the top skin layer, leading to the collagen wound healing.

Microdermabrasion Options

You can choose from two types of microdermabrasion.

  • With the crystal option, a tube releasing super-fine crystals is used to scrub the skin, much like sugar exfoliation.
  • The non-crystal option uses a diamond-tipped wand.

Both require simultaneous vacuuming to remove debris, dead skin, and oil released during the procedure.

Who Cannot Go for Microdermabrasion?

While the risk of serious side effects is slim to none, the specialist may not recommend this skin resurfacing option if you have active acne or skin infection. They are more likely to ask you to wait it out.

On the other hand, if you have skin conditions like rosacea, they will advise against it and recommend other options.

Note: If you have an aluminum allergy, let the practitioner know for the crystal-based option uses aluminum oxide crystal.

The Advantages of Microdermabrasion

  • This non-surgical cosmetic treatment is so painless it doesn’t even require numbing cream.
  • It is suitable for all skin types, tones and is effective against every acne-ridden skin texture out there.
  • It does not damage healthy skin while doing away with the blemished areas.
  • It is a viable treatment option for other skin conditions, such as liver spots, wrinkles and fine lines, older non-acne scars, chickenpox scars, and hyperpigmentation.

Number of Treatment Sessions

Microdermabrasion is not a one-off treatment. You need at least six sessions to remove the mildest scars. Similarly, if your scars are severe, your sessions may go up to ten or even 16 visits.

Fortunately, there is little to no downtime with this procedure, so you can have more than one session per month.
